A nuclear guarantor: the EU takes big risks by discounting nuclear power

Alexey Gromov, Principal Director on Energy Studies of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Baltnews on the possible consequences for the economy of the Baltic countries under abandoning the use of nuclear power plants in Europe.

Alexey Gromov believes that from the point of view of economic logic, the closure of nuclear power plants is clearly not necessary, since this will lead to negative consequences in the economy of the Baltic countries, because electricity will definitely become more expensive.

"Here it is worth listening to France, which supports the inclusion of nuclear energy in the European taxonomy. Why this type of energy can’t be considered as an important element of the "green transition"? CO2 is not emitted, while using nuclear power plants. In terms of climate impact, nuclear energy can be considered "green". Of course, it is harmful in other respects, for example, in matters of safety. But from the reliability point of view, nuclear energy still looks better than other alternatives," the expert noted.

Alexey Gromov said that the position of the European Commission, which does not yet include nuclear power plants in the "green" taxonomy, is erroneous. One can only hope that France, given its weight in Europe, will be able to change this situation and nuclear energy in one form or another will be included in the "green transition" agenda.
