Alexey Belogoryev, Research and Development Director of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented on the causes of the fuel crisis in Mongolia to Business FM:
"It is associated with a sharp reduction in the supply of Russian petroleum products coming from refineries in Eastern Siberia. The reason is that the supply of petroleum products, primarily gasoline, has sharply decreased due to the massive withdrawal and unplanned repairs of refineries in the European part of Russia. At the same time, fuel shortages in the Far East remain stronger than usual. For this reason, it was necessary to redirect trade flows, which come from a few Siberian refineries, respectively, Mongolia did not have the necessary amount of fuel. Some years ago, China was the main supplier, but due to its greater price competitiveness in recent years, Mongolia has switched to Russian petroleum products, and it has become one of the most affected importing countries of Russian gasoline and diesel fuel in terms of supply cuts this fall. And now Mongolia is trying to reach an agreement with China again, and some supplies have started there. Most likely, it will be possible to establish supplies from Russia or China only in mid-November, not earlier."
