Alexey Belogoryev, Research and Development Director of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Mash.Industry on the transshipment of Russian LNG to the EU and the possibility of its transportation by tank containers.
There are two main solutions to this problem: redirecting these volumes of LNG to the EU domestic market, which is exactly what the restriction imposed by the European Union was designed for, or transshipment outside the EU, for example, in the Murmansk Region or just at sea, the expert adds.
The main problem with using tank containers is the relatively low carrying capacity of such vessels: to transport the same volume of LNG, they need several times more than conventional gas carriers, Alexey Belogoryev notes. In addition, they may also be sanctioned. Therefore, according to the expert, such a path is "definitely not a panacea."
