Alexey Belogoryev, Deputy Principal Director on Energy Studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the internet portal Free Press on the intentions of the US presidential administration to remove sanctions against Nord Stream 2 from the country's draft defense budget for the next fiscal year.
Alexey Belogoryev recalled that any sanctions in the defense budget do not imply direct action. “This is always some kind of recommendation from the administration to do something. This is how most sanctions laws work,” he points out, commenting on the publication of the American magazine Foreign Policy.
The final word for the administration, since it is responsible for foreign policy in terms of the power balance distribution, Alexey Belogoryev draws attention:
“It seems to me that even if the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 were included in the defense budget, nothing terrible would have happened. But on the other hand, it is clear that the Biden administration is not very interested in further rocking this topic, unlike the Trump administration."
