The ceiling is icy: can the restriction of gas prices change the energy market

Salikhov Marcel R. President, Principal Director on Economic Studies, Head of the Economic Department

Marcel Salikhov, President of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Izvestia on the impact of the price ceiling introduction in the European Union on Russian gas supplies.

TTF will lose its position relative to other European hubs and the British NPB, Marcel Salikhov says.

— I do not think that the introduction of a ceiling on gas prices will significantly affect the supply of Russian fuel. Currently, their volumes are at the level of 78-82 million cubic meters per day (28-29 billion cubic meters in annual terms), which is about five to six times less than last year's figures. Part of the gas that is still being supplied is most likely partially linked to TTF prices. Therefore, the introduction of the ceiling could potentially have an impact on the value of exports downwards," Marcel Salikhov noted.

However, this impact, taking into account the small volumes of remaining supplies, will not be significant, he added.
