Alexey Gromov, Principal Director on Energy Studies of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the Internet portal Pravda.Ru on the words of Wally Adeyemo, the First Deputy of the US Treasury, about Washington's intention to hold Gazprom accountable for violating the sanctions.

The United States is trying to put pressure on Gazprom due to the completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Alexey Gromov said, commenting the words of Wally Adeyemo.

“I think that the statements that are being made are connected with the fact that they are trying to put pressure on Gazprom in connection with the completion of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline construction,” the expert said.

He recalled that the Donald Trump administration adopted a law on the protection of the European energy security, which spelled out, in particular, US sanctions against Nord Stream 2. According to Gromov, the American congressmen could consider the provisions of the law adopted by the Trump administration to have been violated, since the gas pipeline was built "in spite of US activity".

“Apparently, it is necessary to bring to justice the perpetrators, in this case Gazprom, which nevertheless managed to implement this grandiose project despite all the sanctions resistance that it faced,” the expert suggested.

Earlier, Adeyemo said that the US wants to hold Gazprom accountable for its actions that violate US sanctions. The statement by the representative of the Ministry of Finance was made in connection with criticism from the senators of the US refusal to take measures against Nord Stream 2.
