Sergey Kondratiev, Principal Director on Economic Studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the RBC newspaper on the gasoline export from Russia in 2024.

"Indeed, the export (of gasoline. — RBC) by sea remained stable in February, but the base effect plays a role here," Sergey Kondratiev says.

Firstly, the expert notes, unplanned repairs had a limited effect on the overall dynamics. Since the catalytic cracking unit at the Nizhny Novgorod refinery was put into repair in early January, it did not have a significant impact on the results of February. In addition, the Tuapse refinery, which was attacked by Ukrainian drones at the end of January, does not produce commercial gasoline. Finally, similar attacks on the Volgograd refinery had a limited impact on the plant's production program in terms of gasoline, whereas the plant is one of the three largest producers in terms of diesel fuel, so the effect was more significant.

Secondly, Kondratiev draws attention to the fact that a significant part of Russian exports are to the CIS countries, Mongolia and Afghanistan, where gasoline shipments are carried out mainly by rail. Therefore, data on maritime transport allows you to see only a part of the market.
