Alexey Belogoryev, Research and Development Director of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Infotech on the redirection of Russian gas supplies to Hungary through the Balkan Stream.
Hungary no longer depends on the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine, it receives all volumes through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that now the possibility of stopping transit through Ukraine no longer worries the country.
Alexey Belogoryev said that Hungary can now fully afford such statements, since the country has been receiving Russian gas from Turkey in full for 10 months of this year.
Hungary may need Ukrainian transit only in case of a sharp increase in demand for gas within the country, the analyst believes.
The expert noted that the situation is different for Austria and Slovakia, which are heavily dependent on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. They can no longer count on an alternative.
Belogoryev estimated that only 2-3 billion cubic meters of gas can be additionally sent through the Turkish Stream, but no more.
