Alexey Gromov, Principal Director on Energy studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented on the new EU initiatives to tighten control over LNG transshipment from Russia to the Neft and Capital Internet portal.
As Alexey Gromov explained, measures to tighten monitoring of Russian LNG are aimed at preventing a system transshipment of Russian liquefied natural gas for resale to Asian countries. This is not a momentary desire of the EU, but rather a strategic decision, and even more in the interests of the United States, as an exporter of LNG, and not gas consumers in Europe.
According to Alexey Gromov, the next step of the EU after establishing control over the transshipment of Russian LNG for Asia is its complete ban on the Old World market. In fact, this is the groundwork for the future "clearing of the field" for large volumes of LNG from the United States."Everyone understands that Russian LNG is in demand in the EU now. By the end of this year, compared with 2023, supplies from Russia will grow by about 10%. But this is a short-term prospect. In 2-3 years, when new LNG terminals in Qatar and the United States reach production capacity, the doors in Europe will be closed for Russian LNG.
Russia understands this perfectly well, which is why NOVATEK is focusing on creating a sustainable LNG transshipment system using the western route. It will be the main one, since the Russian Federation does not have enough ice-class tankers to use the Northern Sea Route. The EU sees this, so legal obstacles are already being created so that we cannot use the European port infrastructure. And transshipment of LNG board on board into the sea, as in the case of oil, is quite another thing. The technical requirements are such that a port infrastructure is needed," the expert says.
