Sergey Kondratiev, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented on the development of nuclear energy in Europe to the electronic publication Polit.ru:
«An attempt of the European Commission not only to define the legal framework, but also to regulate strategic issues of energy development in the EU looks quite natural. The EC is already determining what requirements grown fruits and vegetables, caught fish, constructed buildings should meet. Why not to decide whether the EU countries to abandon nuclear energy, or not. But the position of the countries that did not support the proposal to abandon nuclear energy looks more than logical. For France, Belgium, Hungary, Bulgaria and many other EU countries nuclear power plants remain a reliable source of relatively inexpensive and «green» electricity. Their closure (albeit many years later) will lead to billions of dollars in losses for national energy companies, higher electricity prices and a decrease in the competitiveness of the national industry. Bulgaria, if the NPP «Kozloduy» is closed, will probably have to start importing electricity from neighboring Turkey and Romania, and, for example, France — to build tens of thousands of megawatts of new wind and solar power plants… «
