Marcel Salikhov, president of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the internet portal "To be precise" on the revision of Rosstat statistics.
"Rosstat revised the assessment" is a frequent news topic. At the beginning of the year, the agency reported a decrease in industrial production in 2022, but after clarification, the industry showed growth. The incomes of Russians after the revision, instead of a modest 0.1%, immediately increased by 4.4%. This causes distrust — the agency is even accused of "drawing" instead of analytics.
It is normal to revise static indicators — this is often embedded in the calculation methodology. It is assumed that the first value is preliminary, and it will need to be adjusted later.
"In a sense, this is an inevitable compromise between efficiency and accuracy of data, but it is bad if the revisions have a systematic bias in some direction," Marcel Salikhov says.
"The scale of such changes depends on the industry. It can be very different for the oil and light industry," the expert comments.
