Sergey Kondratiev, Principal Director on Economic Studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented on the nuclear energy development in the Far East to the electronic publication InfoTEK.
Sergei Kondratiev said that in the united energy system of the East, an electricity shortage of about 7.4 billion kWh is expected in 2027, but by 2029 it will decrease by half, to 3.7 billion kWh, due to the introduction of new capacities.
The expert noted that the 600 MW of nuclear generation discussed by Rosatom can produce 4.5 billion kWh per year, that is, these volumes will be in demand by the market.
Nevertheless, Rosatom will have to compete with other energy sources. Kondratiev also doubted whether the entire deficit would be formed in the south of the Primorsky Territory, and not in other regions.
"In addition, I am not sure that floating nuclear power plants will be able to compete with gas and coal–fired power plants in terms of cost of electricity generation and cost of capacity," he added.
