Who will give in: will the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project get off the ground

20 May 2026

Gromov Alexey I. Principal Director on Energy Studies, Head of the Energy Department

Alexey Gromov, Principal Director on Energy studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Forbes on the prospects for signing a contract for the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline construction during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China on May 19-20, 2026.

In terms of the Strait of Hormuz closure and interruptions in LNG supplies, China may resume active negotiations and sign an agreement on the Power of Siberia — 2, Alexey Gromov believes.

"I do not rule out that such an agreement is ready, since Alexey Miller, the head of Gazprom, is included in the delegation with which the president is traveling to China," the expert says. "This gives reason for cautious optimism that the deal will take place."
