A long-term trend of high gas prices in Europe

Belogoryev Alexey M. Research and Development Director, Director of the Center for Energy strategic analysis and forecasting

Alexey Belogoryev, Research and Development Director of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to InfoTEK on the risks of insufficient gas reserves replenishment in the EU UGS in 2025.

Alexey Belogoryev said that although the situation remains difficult for Europe, it is not yet critical, since it is not fully clear exactly how the situation will develop – everything will depend on weather conditions.

Nevertheless, as the expert pointed out, the problem of replenishing stocks in conditions of low supply and demand stabilization will keep prices at a relatively high level throughout 2025.

"In the spring and summer, I still expect a moderate seasonal price drawdown, although there are voices in favor of the fact that this may not happen, the average annual spot price of TTF, according to my estimate, will increase by 20% year-on-year in 2025," he said.

The next season may be difficult for Europe, the expert believes. To simply balance annual demand, the EU needs to increase LNG imports by 30 billion cubic meters per year.
