Alexey Belogoryev, Research and Development Director of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the National News Service on the meaning of Azerbaijani gas for the European gas market and its competition with Russian gas.
Azerbaijan has a limited resource base to fully meet Europe's gas needs, Alexey Belogoryev said.
Gas from Azerbaijan is important primarily for southeastern Europe, but it has a very limited resource base and will not be able to fully replace supplies from Russia. Iran is capable of turning the situation around in this regard, but for this it will be necessary to lift sanctions from the country, the expert noted.
"The scale of Azerbaijan's production and exports is not comparable with Russian exports, which covered all the needs of Europe. Gas from Azerbaijan is important primarily for Italy and for the countries of southeastern Europe, where it partially displaces Russian gas. For the consumer, for the importer, it costs exactly the same as the Russian one. For these countries, it is an additional source of supply, but not a key one. Supplies to Germany, I think, are sporadic. This large transport distance is meaningless from the point of view of logistics, large volumes will definitely not go there," Belogoryev said.
