Alexander Balyuta, senior expert at the Energy Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the publication “Expert” on the prospects for growth in Russian coal exports in 2026.
The Institute of Energy and Finance forecasts a 6–7% increase in coal exports. Due to problems in the Azov‑Black Sea basin, the global market is losing about 2.3 million tons of Russian coal, Alexander Balyuta calculated. The redistribution of volumes to the ports of Ust‑Luga and Murmansk makes it possible to reduce losses to 0.7 million tons, he noted.
“But the route to Turkey is significantly lengthened, which negatively affects export profitability, even though prices in the Baltic are currently rising. For Turkish consumers, this is an additional incentive to switch to other suppliers — Colombia and the USA,” the analyst noted.
