Reorientation of Turkmen gas supplies to China is not dangerous for Russia - comment by Sergey Agibalov, the IEF senior expert to Finam.ru Information Agency

The supply of Turkmen gas to the PRC began. On Monday, the presidents of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Islam Karimov and President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao inaugurated the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline.

According to the plans, 150 million cubic meters of Turkmen gas will be supplied to China by the end of 2009, and the volume of supplies will grow every year. It is assumed that in a few years the gas pipeline will reach its full design capacity of 40 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

With the opening of this gas pipeline Ashgabat gets an export market, alternative to the Russian and European ones, which, on the one hand, is good for Turkmenistan, Sergei Agibalov, senior expert at the Institute for Energy and Finance said. But on the other hand the Chinese market may not be so attractive, «It is unlikely that China will allow anyone to cash in on it. Most likely, contract prices will be minimal," the analyst notes.
