Sergey Kondratiev, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Lenta.ru on the reserves of nuclear fuel at ZNPP.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi at the Davos Economic Forum announced the colossal reserves of nuclear fuel at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Energodar. This was announced in the Twitter account by the journalist of The Wall Street Journal, Lawrence Norman. According to Grossi, there were about 30 tons of plutonium and 40 tons of enriched uranium on the territory of the nuclear power plant (the degree of its enrichment is not specified - note by Lenta.ru).

Sergey Kondratiev in a conversation with Lenta.ru emphasized that 30 tons of plutonium, 40 tons of enriched uranium is to much. The specialist suggested that if an economic mistake was not made here, then the question of the degree of enrichment of plutonium and uranium then arises.

“For example, if we are talking about uranium, then for the production of nuclear weapons, the enrichment should be above 80 percent, while nuclear power units, as a rule, use ordinary uranium enriched up to 2-5 percent,” he explained.

Kondratiev also noted that the IAEA has been working for 15 years to ensure that Iran does not receive nuclear weapons. “And now it turns out that events were rapidly unfolding in the very center of Europe that threaten all control over nonproliferation,” the expert concluded.
