Sergey Kondratiev, Principal Director on Economic Studies at the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper on rising gasoline prices in Russia.
Since the beginning of March, the stock prices of gasoline and diesel fuel (DT) have increased by more than 10%, actually approaching the values from which the fuel crisis began last year. The retail situation is calm, prices are stable and have hardly changed since the beginning of the year. It is clear that gas stations will not be able not to react to the rise in price for a long time in wholesale, because they purchase fuel through the stock exchange or at oil depots.
According to Kondratiev, the translation of wholesale market quotations into gas station prices will be quite slow. Retail has a margin of safety, and market participants will monitor what will happen in the wholesale. Of course, for independent networks, the current situation in the market creates great risks, and in this market segment we may see a price increase very soon. But even in this case, the increase is unlikely to be significant - on the horizon of 1-2 months - an increase of no more than 3%.
