Alexander Titov, senior expert at the Energy Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented on the coal supply to the domestic market and for export to Moskovskaya Gazeta.
The current problems of the Russian coal industry are largely related to coal exports (low prices, difficulty in getting to ports, sanctions, the need to give discounts, etc.), and the domestic market does not feel these problems much, Alexander Titov:
It is possible that difficulties with domestic coal transportation between coal mining entities are growing, the expert noted."The domestic market in Russia is not supplied with the same energy coal that is exported. It is mainly high—calorie coal for export, and low—calorie coal for the domestic market. It is very difficult to replace one grade/brand of coal with another. Often power plants/boilers are designed for coal even from a specific deposit (because there are many different parameters in the coal specification), so Russia, for example, continues to import coal from Kazakhstan. So I don't see any big risks for the regions. The growth of domestic coal prices is under the attention of the Federal Antimonopoly Service."
"But I think that there should be no critical problems here to provide coal to the domestic market," Alexander Titov believes.
