Rain cooled the quotes

Baliuta Alexander V. Head of the Global Oil Market Sector

Alexander Balyuta, senior expert at the Energy Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, commented to Kommersant on the coal prices decline in Asia at the end of June 2026.

Alexander Balyuta says that the rainy weather in China has allowed to increase the production of hydroelectric power plants, which has reduced interest in coal shipments on the spot market and allowed buyers to achieve lower prices. He also draws attention to the growth of renewable energy generation in India, due to which it was possible to reduce the utilization of coal-fired thermal power plants. Nevertheless, according to Mr. Balyuta, the price reduction will be limited in the coming months.

According to him, if the heat returns to China and South Korea, prices may start to rise again, and the recovery of coal production in China after the accident at one of the mines is proceeding slowly. In addition, the rainy season in India will slow down coal production in the country, which in April—May lagged behind last year by almost 10%, Alexander Balyuta notes.
