The Platform «Energy Initiatives» was created in March 2018 by the initiative of the Institute for Energy and Finance with support of leading Russian and foreign energy experts. The idea of creating the Platform was first announced by the FIEF representatives at the 8th International IEA-OPEC-IEF Symposium on World Energy Forecasts on February 15, 2018 (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia).

The Platform is an informal (not having a legal entity), permanent, international, public, voluntary, non-profit association of leading Russian and international experts in the energy field. The association has been established as a discussion platform to assist in formation of a comprehensive understanding the prospects for developing world energy markets, taking into account the emerging factors and risks.

As of September 2019, the Platform includes more than 60 individual experts, as well as a number of corporate participants (Citigroup, Wood Mackenzie, Platts, IHS Markit, Rystad Energy, KAPSARC, SPIMEX, etc.).

Four international seminars «Energy Initiatives» were been holding within the Platform’s activities during 2018–2019: on September 18, 2018 in Vienna, on November 13, 2018 in Moscow, on April 23, 2019 in Vienna and on September 12, 2019 in Singapore. The last two seminars took place with the organizational support of Citigroup. A number of smaller seminars took also place in Moscow. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no seminars were held.

The main goals of creating the Platform are:

  • timely identification of risks (economic, technological, financial, structural) of long-term development of the world energy system, in-depth risks analysis and elaborating recommendations for their mitigation;
  • development of recommendations on existing obstacles and mechanisms for achieving a medium-term balance of supply and demand in the global market for liquid hydrocarbons, pipeline and liquefied gas based on the opinions shared by leading Russian and foreign experts from the most influential international and national energy agencies, research and consulting organizations and industry companies.

The Platform’s Membership, despite its informal nature, is closed — to accept new members, approval from the existing members of the Platform is required. Media representatives are not allowed to attend the Platform’s events, excepting invitation to open ones.
